Foreign Supplier Verification Program Deadline
On November 27, 2015, the Food and Drug Administration’s published its final rule on the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) for Importers of Food for Humans and Animals. This program was created so that importers identify their food suppliers and to ensure those suppliers produce all food imported into the U.S. safely and with proper labeling.
NOTE: The compliance date for some businesses is May 27, 2017 – 18 months after the publication date in the Federal Register.
C J International wants to remind you of the upcoming implementation date of the FSVP. It is critical that you identify and provide us with information on who the FSVP importer is as well as all related registration numbers for that importer. As of May 27, 2017 FSVP importers MUST be identified in ACE with no exceptions.
The final rule, which was first proposed in July 2013, is the result of the remarkable outreach program initiated by the FDA to the trade community. While this legislation is extensive, it does provide more flexibility “in determining appropriate verification measures based on food and supplier risks, while acknowledging the greater risk to public health posed by the most serious hazards in food.”
More information on this topic is available at the FDA web page. Please also note that the FDA is planning continued outreach in order to provide guidance documents and other training/technical assistance to the industry.
