Increase in Trade War Tariffs

This week, President Trump directed U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to consider raising the proposed tariffs from 10 percent to 25 percent on an additional $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. The 25 percent would apply to the proposed list of items previously announced on July 10.

As to the further action proposed under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, yesterday USTR Lighthizer released a statement saying “the increase in the possible rate of the additional duty is intended to provide the Administration with additional options to encourage China to change its harmful policies and behavior and adopt policies that will lead to fairer markets and prosperity for all of our citizens.”

The due date for filing requests to appear and a summary of expected testimony at the public hearing, and for filing pre-hearing submissions is August 13, 2018. (extended deadline – previously July 27, 2018).
